{"id":1375,"date":"2021-09-27T12:18:02","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T16:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/oldp\/?page_id=1375"},"modified":"2026-06-25T16:43:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T20:43:23","slug":"doctoral-practicum","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/doctoral-practicum\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctoral Fieldwork"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the program requirements for completion of the PhD in Organizational Leadership each student is required to complete a doctoral fieldwork.\u00a0 The doctoral fieldwork is an experiential-based learning opportunity that each student undertakes as an individual growth opportunity to expand their scholarly and professional interests.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The most important aspect of the doctoral fieldwork is that it must involve NEW LEARNING.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doctoral fieldwork consists of six credits in total. The scope of the project will justify the credit allocation.&nbsp; To complete all six doctoral fieldwork credits, students most often undertake one extensive project, divided into two parts that is completed over two semesters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three directions that students can take to complete their doctoral fieldwork.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;Production of an original scholarly article and subsequent submission to a scholarly journal.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Presentation and attendance at an academic conference.&nbsp; Such as the Annual International Leadership Association&nbsp; &nbsp;Conference.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Original Idea &#8211; Students have an option to find additional experiential learning opportunities that will contribute to their&nbsp; &nbsp;academic and professional pursuits.&nbsp; This must&nbsp;<strong>constitute new learning<\/strong>&nbsp;and it cannot be related to your current work.&nbsp;<br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sample Original Ideas Include:&nbsp; Develop a course, program assessment, travel abroad for a learning experience, grant writing, strategic planning, start a nonprofit, development of a business plan.&nbsp;<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ALL doctoral fieldworks must be approved by the ORLD Practicum Committee.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Approval includes submission of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stg15.umes.edu\/uploadedFiles\/_WEBSITES\/ORLD\/Content\/DOCTORAL%20INTERNSHIP%20APPROVAL%20FORM.pdf\">doctoral fieldwork proposal form<\/a>&nbsp;AND a brief presentation to the Fieldwork Committee reviewing your proposed fieldwork.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;This presentation should include a description of the fieldwork, the research questions to be explored, and the new learning that is anticipated.&nbsp; The exact credit allocation will depend on the extensiveness of the fieldwork experience.&nbsp; To complete the doctoral fieldwork requirement, six credits in total are required.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doctoral fieldworks are not complete until final submission of the scholarly product is received and a presentation is given to the Doctoral Committee.&nbsp; This presentation should review the scholarly product, address the research questions, and the new learning that occurred.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the program requirements for completion of the PhD in Organizational Leadership each student is required to complete a doctoral fieldwork.\u00a0 The doctoral fieldwork is an experiential-based learning opportunity that each student undertakes as an individual growth opportunity to expand their scholarly and professional interests.\u00a0\u00a0The most important aspect of the doctoral fieldwork is&#8230;<span class=\"cpschool-read-more-link-holder\"><a class=\"btn btn-basic cpschool-read-more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/doctoral-practicum\/\">Read more <span class=\"sr-only\">Doctoral Fieldwork<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_coblocks_attr":"","_coblocks_dimensions":"","_coblocks_responsive_height":"","_coblocks_accordion_ie_support":"","footnotes":""},"folder":[],"class_list":["post-1375","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/1375","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1375"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/1375\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1375"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"folder","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/orld\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/folder?post=1375"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
