Nyla Thompson is pursuing a B.S. in Marine and Environmental Science at Hampton University. Conducting research under the mentorship of Dr. Indu Sharma, her research focuses on the degradation of marine polysaccharides, specifically laminarin and fucoidan, and their role in carbon cycling and long-term carbon sequestration in the ocean. This work supports NOAA’s mission of advancing scientific understanding and promoting environmental stewardship. After graduation, Nyla hopes to explore a career in fieldwork research and outreach.
