Mentors are committed to helping their peers adjust to life at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Mentors lead workshops and forums, organize study groups, plan activities with their cohorts, and participate in campus events. Mentors play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of CAAS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark>Primary Responsibilities<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Attend and facilitate the first-year experience classes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Serve as an energetic and enthusiastic volunteer to help first-year students succeed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Develop and maintain relationships and provide assistance\/support for first-year students (focus on a smooth transition, acclimation and a sense of belonging)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Participate in training and professional development activities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Attend weekly meetings with the Assistant Director of CAAS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Serve as a positive role model<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Assist students and the operations within CAAS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Help students become familiar with university resources; advise and refer residents to appropriate university resources, as the need arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Collect data from all mentee outreach (e.g., emails, texts, meetings, referrals, social media hits)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark>Minimum Qualifications<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Be a rising sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum 3.0 cum GPA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Be a full-time UMES student in good academic and social standing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Be willing to learn and share information about the UMES community, student life, and campus resources<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Have a genuine desire to help their peers succeed<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Demonstrate leadership potential<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Be self-motivated with a positive attitude<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Display a willingness to learn about different cultures<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark>Benefits<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peer mentors have the opportunity to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Build close relationships with new students<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Develop leadership skills<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Guide new students through their first-year<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><mark>Hourly Rate:<\/mark> <\/strong>$15.00 per hour; 10 hours per week<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark><strong>Application Process and Deadline<\/strong>:<\/mark> In order for your application to be processed and considered, you MUST fill out a workship application for the Office of Human Resources.
