The Department of Aviation Sciences is seeking Student Interns for the Aviation Science Program to support the Maryland Eastern Shore Drone Medical Delivery project during Summer 2025.
What are the responsibilities of Student Interns?
Student interns will assist the Aviation Science team with the coordination and execution of the
DOT SMART grant drone delivery project and other associated projects. Activities will include
supporting flight demonstrations, data collection, community engagement activities, and
assisting with drone operations between Crisfield, MD and Smith Island. Interns will participate
in field operations, assist with planning drone delivery routes, and support the technical
implementation of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) services for medical delivery applications.
Who can apply?
Students registered as full-time degree-seeking students in the Spring 2025 semester who are in
good conduct standing with the UMES conduct office. Applicants should be available to work
flexible hours that include daytime, evening, and weekend hours as scheduled by the supervisor.
Students majoring in Aviation Science with a Concentration in Professional Pilot are preferred.
Junior or senior students with flight certifications or UAS experience are preferred. Students with
knowledge of drone operations, FAA regulations, or healthcare logistics are especially
encouraged to apply.
What skills do I need?
Student Interns are expected to have a high level of professionalism (e.g., dependability,
punctuality, professional demeanor, strong oral and written communication skills); patience;
confidentiality; high integrity, motivation, ethics, and initiative. Individuals must possess a valid
driver’s license. Weekend hours may be required. Interest in UAS technology, aviation
regulations, and community engagement is highly desirable.
Start Date: June 2, 2025
Payment: $15.00/hour; 20-40 hours per week.

About the Maryland Eastern Shore Drone Medical Delivery Project
This internship supports UMES’ partnership in the Maryland Eastern Shore Drone Medical Delivery project funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s SMART grant. The project aims to improve healthcare access in disadvantaged rural areas by using drones to deliver medical supplies, especially to isolated communities like Smith Island. Interns will gain hands on experience with innovative aviation technology and contribute to a project that enhances equitable access to healthcare while developing advanced drone delivery systems.
