Our core mission is to educate and prepare professionals who will serve individuals, families, and neighbors and enhance the quality of life in a global society. Our focus on family-centered professions makes us instrumental in supporting the well-being of families and their neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As one of the oldest departments at UMES, we have a rich history of growth and innovation. Our primary goal is to prepare the next generation of professionals to serve families. Accredited by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, our department is part of the School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences, the university&#8217;s land grant arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our department offers majors tailored to different interests and career paths. We have expanded our academic offerings by introducing a standalone B.S. degree in Fashion Merchandising and Design, an online option for the Child Development program, and an M.S. degree in Human Ecology. Students can also major in Human Ecology with a concentration in one of five areas: child development, dietetics, nutrition, family and consumer sciences, and family and consumer sciences education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We provide hands-on learning opportunities for all students in our cutting-edge laboratories. Human Ecology students can join the Human Ecology Club and Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society in addition to other campuswide clubs and organizations. Getting involved in college clubs and organizations, coupled with social events organized throughout the academic year, there\u2019s something for everyone at UMES. Our strategic location within driving distance of major cities \u2014&nbsp;such as Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia, PA; Richmond, VA; and New York City \u2014 makes student life at UMES vibrant and unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paying for UMES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES is affordable. The <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/admissions\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/admissions\/\">UMES Office of Admissions and Recruitment <\/a>offers numerous financial packages, and our department offers several financial assistance opportunities. The <strong>Department of Human Ecology<\/strong> degree undergraduates are also offered the opportunity to enroll in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/sans\/umes-land-grant-scholarship-program\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">UMES Land-Grant Scholarship Program<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.
