{"id":1337,"date":"2021-09-27T01:26:49","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T05:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/grad\/?page_id=1337"},"modified":"2021-12-06T12:37:23","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T16:37:23","slug":"f-1-visas-and-regulations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/grad\/f-1-visas-and-regulations\/","title":{"rendered":"F-1 visas and regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/grad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/09\/Welcome-1024x341.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1338\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Students with F-1 Visas at UMES<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>All new students must check in at the Office of Admissions and Recruitment with Visa\/Passport and Initial Status I-20 during the first week of classes to activate student status!<\/strong><br><strong>Please be sure that I-20 information is accurate and kept current at all times.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>F-1 Status<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are maintaining lawful status if you are making normal progress toward completing a course of study and complying with the immigration regulations outlined below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Immigration Regulations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pursue a \u201cfull course of study\u201d at the school listed on your current Form I-20. A full course of study is 12 or more credits per semester for undergraduate students and 9 or more credits per semester for graduate students. Exceptions to the full-time requirement must be authorized in advance by your DSO (designated school official).<\/li><li>Complete your studies on or before the program completion date listed as your program end date on your I-20.<\/li><li>Keep your I-20 valid by following proper procedures for a program extension, change in educational level or field of study, and transfer of schools.<\/li><li>Remain in the U.S. for no longer than 60 days after completing your current program of study or after completing an authorized period of practical training.<\/li><li>Keep your passport valid at all times unless you are exempt from the passport requirement.<\/li><li>Accept no employment except that which is authorized in accordance with the immigration regulations.<\/li><li>Report any change of address to immigration within 10 days of the change.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you fail to maintain status, you are ineligible for any of the benefits of F-1 status (for example, employment authorization).&nbsp;<strong>There are two ways to regain status: apply for reinstatement or depart the U.S. and seek a new admission to the U.S. in F-1 status.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/grad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2021\/12\/Guidance_Online_Filing_Form_I-765_OPT-V1.6.pdf\">Guidance for Online Filing &#8211; Form  I- 765 (OTP).<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students with F-1 Visas at UMES All new students must check in at the Office of Admissions and Recruitment with Visa\/Passport and Initial Status I-20 during the first week of classes to activate student status!Please be sure that I-20 information is accurate and kept current at all times.
