{"id":1343,"date":"2021-09-11T20:41:21","date_gmt":"2021-09-12T00:41:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/geosciences\/?page_id=1343"},"modified":"2022-04-28T14:15:28","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T18:15:28","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/geosciences\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/geosciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/100\/2021\/09\/IMG_1833-websm.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1344\" width=\"352\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/geosciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/100\/2021\/09\/IMG_1833-websm.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/geosciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/100\/2021\/09\/IMG_1833-websm-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Geosciences Program takes place over six (6) weeks in the summer at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in Princess Anne, MD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geosciences Program Interns:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reside in the UMES residence halls (housing and meals are provided), accompanied by trained resident assistants.<\/li><li>Participate in lectures and field trips with hands-on activities in areas of geoscience such as atmospheric science, biogeochemistry, civil and environmental engineering, environmental science, marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, physical oceanography, remote sensing\/GIS and related fields.<\/li><li>Enroll in either College Algebra or Calculus I (dependent upon math placement test score) and Freshman Seminar course.<\/li><li>Receive $500 per week, paid bi-weekly and reimbursement for travel to\/from UMES.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility Criteria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Geosciences Program is for graduating high school seniors who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Are either a US Citizen or Permanent Resident<\/li><li>Have a minimum 2.7 GPA.<\/li><li>Have been accepted into an accredited US college\/university.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/geosciences\/application-information\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1348\">Preference will be given to students entering the institutions listed on the Application Information page<\/a>.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Plan to pursue a bachelor&#8217;s degree in a geoscience discipline, such as atmospheric science, engineering (civil, electrical, environmental, ocean), environmental science, geography, marine biology, marine chemistry\/biogeochemistry, marine geology, marine science, meteorology, physical oceanography, remote sensing\/GIS, etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Program Benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Paid travel to and from UMES, housing, meals, stipend and tuition and fees for two (2) for-credit college courses (Math and Freshman Seminar, credited through UMES).<\/li><li>Students who attend a NOAA Cooperative Science Center (CSC) university partner may be eligible for scholarship opportunities and research positions through their respective center.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/cooperative-science-centers\/2016-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read about the Centers, their research and their academic partners<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li><li>A network of faculty and staff that can provide support for finding future internships and opportunities with one of our partners, such as The Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Geosciences Program takes place over six weeks in the summer at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in Princess Anne, MD. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/geosciences\/faq\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Learn more.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Geosciences Program takes place over six (6) weeks in the summer at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in Princess Anne, MD.
