Entrance and Exit Counseling

Federal Direct Loan student borrowers are federally required to complete Entrance and Exit Counseling. The purpose of each is to provide students with important information regarding their rights and responsibilities as borrowers; the commitment/ responsibility affiliated with borrowing a loan; and understand loan management. Loans are not grants or scholarships; loans must be repaid.

Entrance Counseling

Entrance Counseling is required for all first-time Federal Direct and Graduate PLUS loan borrowers.  Entrance Counseling is completed online (www.studentaid.gov > ‘Loans and Grants’ > ‘Loan Entrance Counseling’) and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. 

Federal Direct and Graduate PLUS loans will not be disbursed until Entrance Counseling has been completed. Confirmation of Entrance Counseling completion is received the Office of Student Financial Aid daily.

Exit Counseling

All student borrowers who leave UMES either by graduating, withdrawing, or failing to return for a subsequent semester are required by Federal Law to complete online Exit Counseling, which approximately 30-40 minutes to complete.

Exit Counseling may be completed online at www.studentaid.gov > ‘Loan Repayment’ > ‘Loan Exit Counseling’.  Confirmation of Exit Counseling completion is received by the Office of Student Financial Aid daily.  Exit Counseling must be completed to obtain an official transcript from the UMES Registrar’s Office.  Official transcripts may be released only after confirmation completion results are received.
