Cost of Attendance (COA)

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Office of Student Financial Aid establishes estimated budgets also termed Cost of Attendance which are used to determine need and eligibility for financial aid awards.  The Cost of Attendance also provides students and their families with a reasonable estimate of all costs, both direct and indirect.  These budgets include allowances for tuition and fees, room and board, books, transportation and personal expenses based on full-time enrollment. The University reserves the right to adjust a student’s budget based on enrollment or other mitigating factors.

Residency Categories

UMES has three categories of residency – In-State, Out-of-State, and Eastern Shore Regional. They are determined by the following general guidelines and are required to meet all residency requirements set by the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Experience:

  • Maryland Resident – MUST be a legal resident of the state of Maryland
  • Eastern Shore Regional Resident – MUST be a legal resident of the state of Delaware or Eastern Shore of Virginia
  • Out of State Resident – If you do not meet either of the above residency requirements, then you are considered Out-of-State

Tuition and Fees

The tuition and fee amounts used in the cost of attendance budgets are based on full-time enrollment.

Room and Board

Room and board (food) allowance is based on the average expense a student may incur based on their living status. The cost associated with the student’s choice of meal plan and residency status (on or off campus) may vary from budget estimates.

Books and Supplies

The books and supplies allowance is based on an estimate provided by the UMES Bookstore for full-time enrollment.

Transportation

The transportation allowance is based on the average expense a student may incur based on their living status. The cost is associated with the variety of transportation expenses a student may incur (e.g. gas, maintenance, public transportation, travel to home state during vacations and holidays).

Personal Expenses

Miscellaneous expenses include allowances for clothing, toiletries and other living expenses.

*Note: To determine actual cost of attendance, students must be attending UMES and have submitted an official FAFSA. The cost presented below are per academic year for students with full-time enrollment status.

Tuition and fees are estimated at the time of awarding. Actual tuition and fee charges are determined by the Maryland Board of Regents at a later date.
