The following is a list of digital resources provided by the Frederick Douglass Library to assist you with research in Health and Medicine. These resources can be accessed by clicking on the title links below. When connecting from off campus, you will be prompted for the 14-digit barcode from the back of your HawkCard ID and your last name.

Below is a quick guide providing examples from the latest edition of the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style. Additionally, the library provides access to RefWorks, an online citation management tool, that allows you to import citations from databases and websites and create bibliographies automatically (be sure to set the output style to AMA, 11th edition).

Allen Press (Ejournals) – The library subscribes to the following titles:

CINAHL Plus with Full Text (EBSCO) The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) database provides indexing coverage for the majority of nursing journals including publications from state nursing associations. Full-text coverage of articles date back to 1937. This resource also provides legal cases, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials and access to health care books, nursing dissertations, conference proceedings, standards of practice, audiovisuals, and more. Cochrane Library – This website is a collection of databases on medicine and other healthcare specialties by the Cochrane to inform healthcare decision-making. The core collection of Cochrane Reviews summarize and interpret the results of medical research.

Coronavirus Research Database (ProQuest) – Includes coverage of the COVID-19 outbreak and curates openly available content related to coronaviruses. It includes thousands of open-access articles from the world’s leading publishers as well as current research from pre-print repositories such as arXiv at Cornell University.

Future Medicine – Nanomedicine is a biweekly, peer-reviewed journal covering research on medical nanoscale-structured material and devices, biotechnology devices and molecular machine systems.

Health Source: Consumer Edition (EBSCO) – This full-text database of consumer health information provides access to consumer health magazines and reference books. It also provides searching for health pamphlets and patient education fact sheets. This collection also includes Clinical Pharmacology, which provides up-to-date, concise and clinically-relevant drug monographs for all U.S. prescription drugs, herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products and new drugs. Subjects covered include fitness, nutrition, diabetes, aging, women’s health, children’s health and more. Coverage: 1985 – current

Health Source: Nursing/Academic (EBSCO) – This full-text database covers nursing and allied health topics, including pediatric nursing, critical care, nursing management, mental health, medial law and more. Coverage includes nearly 600 scholarly journal titles. Note: some titles do not include the current year. 

Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy – is a peer-reviewed medical journal covering research about musculoskeletal rehabilitation, orthopedics, physical therapy, and sports medicine.

MEDLINE (EBSCO) – This database provides abstracts and indexingusing Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) for about4,600 biomedical journals published in the U.S. and 70 foreigncountries. Coverage includes the fieldsof medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, psychiatry, pre-clinical sciences, medical education and healthcare planning and administration of services. 

MedlinePlus (National Library of Medicine) – This website provides high-quality health information from the world’s largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine. Health professionals and consumers can depend on it for information that is authoritative and up-to-date. This resource has extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 650 diseases and conditions.

MentalHealth.gov (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services)

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine – The National Academies Press publishes reports in science, engineering and medicine. More than 8,500 titles are available for free and can be read online or downloaded in PDF format by the entire book or chapter. 

New England Journal of Medicine – This website provides access to the weekly peer-reviewed medical journal published by the Massachusetts Medical Society. Coverage: 1812 – current

Nursing Reference Center (EBSCO) – Nursing Reference Center is a point-of-care evidence-based resource that delivers the best available and most recent clinical evidence and knowledge on conditions and diseases. Resources include skills and procedures, drug information, patient education, practice resources and continuing education.

Oxford University Press (Ejournals) – Titles subscribed to by the library include:

PLOS Medicine – This peer-reviewed weekly open access medical journal covers the full-range of the medical sciences. Published by Public Library of Science (PLOS). Coverage: 10/19/2004 – current   

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection (EBSCO) – This resource is a comprehensive database with nearly 470 full-text titles. It covers information concerning topics in emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry and psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. 

PsycINFO (EBSCO) – This source is the most comprehensive index in psychology and related fields, with more than 1.7 million citations and abstracts of journal articles, book chapters and books, technical reports and dissertations. Its holdings include material from 1,700 periodicals in over 30 languages. Coverage: 1887 – current

SAGE Premier Journals (SAGE Publishing) – This web database provides full-text access to more than 650 peer-reviewed journals, including high-impact research and international titles on behalf of over 500 scholarly and professional societies. Health and medicine titles include: American Journal of Sports Medicine, International Journal of Aging & Human Development, Journal of Black Psychology, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, Medical Care Research & Review, New Solutions, among others. Search this database by topic, browse by journal title, or browse by the Health Sciences discipline.

ScienceDirect (Elsevier) – This full-text database contains peer-reviewed journal titles and ebooks covering the fields of science, technology and medicine. It includes extensive coverage in the physical and biological sciences, engineering, life sciences, health sciences, a significant number of journals in the social sciences and some journals in the humanities.

SocINDEX with Full Text (EBSCO) – This is a full-text research database covering sociology and related disciplines, including social work, gender studies, criminal justice, social psychology, racial studies and religion. It provides access to over 900 full-text peer-reviewed journals and abstracts for core coverage journals dating back to 1895. It also includes extensive indexing for books, monographs, conference papers and other sources.

Trip Medical Database – This clinical search engine allows health professionals to identify high-quality clinical evidence for practice and care. Evidence is gathered by Trip from a network of users. NOTE: Users must register to use this free resource. Coverage: 1997 – current

Biological Science Collection (ProQuest) – This collection includes the Biological Sciences, MEDLINE and TOXLINE databases and provides full-text titles from around the world, including scholarly journals, trade and industry journals, magazines, technical reports, conference proceedings and government publications. It includes abstracting and indexing resources related to medicine, technology and the environment. Coverage: 1946 – current

National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Bookshelf – This website published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine provides free online access to books and documents in the areas of life science and healthcare.

TOXLINE (ProQuest) – This database, produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, provides bibliographic citations and abstracts from the core journal literature in all areas of toxicology, including chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, environmental pollutants and mutagens and teratogens. TOXLINE can also be searched through the Natural Science Collection link. Coverage: 1999 to the present.

Academic Search Ultimate (EBSCO) – This multi-disciplinary database provides information to support most academic disciplines and subjects. Includes full-text for peer-reviewed journals, magazines, newspapers and books. Coverage: 1965 – current

African American Studies Center (Oxford) – This reference source on African American Studies provides full-text access to 20,000 articles by top scholars in the field. Core content includes the Encyclopedia of African American History 1619-1895, the 2nd edition of Black Women in America and the African American National Biography.

ArticleFirst (OCLC) – OCLC index of articles from the contents pages of over 12,000 journals.

Dissertations & Theses Global (ProQuest) – This database is the authoritative source for information about doctoral dissertations and master’s theses. It represents the works of authors from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities. Full-text is available from 1997 to the present. Coverage:1861 – current 

Ebook Central (ProQuest) – This database is a collection of thousands of full-text online books on a broad range of subjects in the humanities, natural and physical sciences and the social sciences. Browse the collection by subject or search it by author, title, ISBN or topic. Ebooks can be read online or downloaded to a device.

Ebook Collection (EBSCO) – Formerly NetLibrary, this collection of ebooks covers topics chosen by the University of Maryland Libraries.

Ebook Comprehensive Academic Collection (EBSCO) – This multidisciplinary collection includes over 200,000 ebook titles covering a large selection of academic subjects and features ebooks from leading publishers and university presses. 

Ebooks (OCLC) – This online catalog contains all the electronic books cataloged by OCLC members. 

JSTOR – An electronic archive of journals in in the following areas: Arts & Sciences, Business, Ecology & Botany, Hebrew Journals, Ireland, Jewish Studies, Life Sciences and some Public Health. Also provides access to primary source collections.

PapersFirst (OCLC) – This index contains papers presented at conferences worldwide. Over 2,380,000 records. Coverage: 1993 – current 

ProceedingsFirst (OCLC) – This resource is an index of worldwide conference proceedings with over 74,000 records. Each record contains a list of the papers presented at the conference. Coverage: 1993 – current 

WorldCat (OCLC) – WorldCat is the world’s most comprehensive database of information about library collections. Includes books, journals and all other types of media.
