The tabs below list the digital resources available through the Frederick Douglass Library to assist you with research in Education. These resources can be accessed by clicking on the title links below. When connecting from off campus, you will be prompted for the 14-digit barcode from the back of your HawkCard ID and your last name.

Below are two quick guides providing citation examples from the latest edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). The library also provides access to RefWorks, an online citation management tool, that allows you to import citations from databases and websites and automatically create bibliographies (be sure to set the output style to APA, 7th edition).

Education Research

Education Database (ProQuest) – This database includes over 1,000 full-text journals and 18,000 dissertations supporting research on the theory and practice of education. It supports the study and application of education across all levels of education, including early childhood education, primary and secondary education, and higher education. ERIC (EBSCO) – The ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education provides access to information from over 1,000 education and education-related journals. It covers all aspects and all levels of education. Coverage: 1966 – current 

ERIC (ProQuest)– The ERIC database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education provides extensive access to education-related literature through its coverage of journal articles, conferences, meetings, government documents, theses, dissertations, reports, audiovisual media, bibliographies, directories, books and monographs. Howard University(Project Muse) – The library subscribes to the following title:

Mental Measurements Yearbook with Tests in Print (EBSCO) – This resource is essential for evaluating contemporary testing instruments. It includes over 2,000 educational, psychological and vocational tests and measurements commercially published in the English language. It consists of full-text descriptive entries, references and full-text critical reviews of assessment tools.

National Association of Elementary School Principals – The library subscribes to the following journals:

National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) – This open access source provides current resources on classroom laboratory safety, inquiry-based learning and making science lessons accessible (diversity, equity and inclusion).

Natural Science Collection (ProQuest) – This source includes the Agricultural & Environmental Science Collection, the Biological Science Collection and the Earth, Atmospheric & Aquatic Science Collection and provides full-text titles from scholarly journals, trade and industry journals, magazines, technical reports, conference proceedings, government publications and more. It also includes specialized abstracting and indexing resources for literature reviews. Coverage: 1946 – current

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection (EBSCO) – This resource is a comprehensive database with nearly 470 full-text titles. It covers information concerning topics in emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry and psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. 

PsycINFO (EBSCO) – This source is the most comprehensive index in psychology and related fields, with more than 1.7 million citations and abstracts of journal articles, book chapters and books, technical reports and dissertations. Its holdings include material from 1,700 periodicals in over 30 languages. Coverage: 1887 – current  

SAGE Premier Journals (SAGE Publishing) – This web database provides full-text access to more than 650 peer-reviewed journals, including high-impact research and international titles on behalf of over 500 scholarly and professional societies. Titles for education include the following and can be accessed by clicking the SAGE link and browsing journals by title.

ScienceDirect (Elsevier) – This full-text database contains peer-reviewed journal titles and ebooks covering the fields of science, technology and medicine. It includes extensive coverage in the social sciences and humanities. Education titles include: Computers & Education, International Journal of Educational Development and International Journal of Educational Research.

SocINDEX with Full Text (EBSCO) – This is a full-text research database covering sociology and related disciplines, including social work, gender studies, criminal justice, social psychology, racial studies and religion. It provides access to over 900 full-text peer-reviewed journals and abstracts for core coverage journals dating back to 1895. It also includes extensive indexing for books, monographs, conference papers and other sources.

General Education

Chronicle of Higher Education – Website provides full-text access to the Chronicle of Higher Education and also includes daily news, current issues in education, discussion forums and current job listings in academia. Coverage: 1989 – current

JSTOR – An electronic archive of journals in in the following areas: Arts & Sciences, Business, Ecology & Botany, Hebrew Journals, Ireland, Jewish Studies, Life Sciences and some Public Health. Also provides access to primary source collections.

MAS Ultra: School Edition (EBSCO) – This full-text database provides coverage to over 500 popular, general interest and current events publications, as well as 250 reference books, nearly 100,000 biographies, over 70,000 primary source documents, and an image collection of 110,000 photos, maps and flags. 

Opposing Viewpoints (Gale) – This database draws on the acclaimed social issues series published by Greenhaven Press, as well as core reference content from other Gale and Macmillan Reference USA sources to provide pro/con analysis on social issues. Access viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to websites and full-text magazine and newspaper articles. 

PrepSTEP for Colleges & Universities (EBSCO Learning Express) – This online platform provides test preparation and skill building tutorials for academic success in college. Tutorials include core skills in English, math, science, computer science, as well as planning and organizational skills necessary for college. Graduate admissions practice tests are included for the GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT and more. This platform also contains career preparation information. To begin, users must register for an account (instructions are provided).

Primary Search (EBSCO) – This database contains full-text for more than 50 popular, elementary school magazines. Full-text articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Also contains full-text for over 100 student pamphlets. Additionally, Primary Search includes the Encyclopedia of Animal, and features the Funk & Wagnall’s New Encyclopedia, which provides students with easy-to-read encyclopedic entries written specifically for children. This resource also provides the American Heritage Children’s Dictionary(3rd Edition from Houghton Mifflin) and an Image Collection of 91,000 photos, maps and flags.

Professional Development Collection (EBSCO) – The database provides a highly specialized collection of electronic information especially for professional educators. It offers information on everything from children’s health and development to cutting-edge pedagogical theory and practice. 

Teacher Reference Center (EBSCO) – This database provides indexing and abstracts for over 280 of the most popular teacher and administrator trade journals to assist professional educators. Topics include curriculum development, literary standards, pedagogical research, higher education and more.

African American Studies Center (Oxford) – This reference source on African American Studies provides full-text access to 20,000 articles by top scholars in the field. Core content includes the Encyclopedia of African American History 1619-1895, the 2nd edition of Black Women in America and the African American National Biography.

Dissertations & Theses Global (ProQuest)

Ebook Central (ProQuest) – This database is a collection of thousands of full-text online books on a broad range of subjects in the humanities, natural and physical sciences and the social sciences.

Ebook Collection (EBSCO) – Formerly NetLibrary, this collection of ebooks covers topics chosen by the University of Maryland Libraries and includes education.

Ebook Comprehensive Academic Collection (EBSCO) – This multidisciplinary collection includes over 200,000 ebook titles covering a large selection of academic subjects and features ebooks from leading publishers and university presses. 

Ebooks (OCLC) – This online catalog contains all the electronic books cataloged by OCLC members. 

MasterFILE Premier (EBSCO) – This full-text database provides coverage to nearly 2,000 general periodicals, reference books and primary source documents. It also includes an extensive image collection containing photos, maps and flags.

PapersFirst (OCLC) – This index contains papers presented at conferences worldwide. Over 2,380,000 records. Coverage: 1993 – current 

ProceedingsFirst (OCLC) – This resource is an index of worldwide conference proceedings with over 74,000 records. Each record contains a list of the papers presented at the conference. Coverage: 1993 – current 

WorldCat (OCLC) – WorldCat is the world’s most comprehensive database of information about library collections. Includes books, journals and all other types of media.
