{"id":1420,"date":"2022-03-06T18:38:41","date_gmt":"2022-03-06T22:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/ehs\/?page_id=1420"},"modified":"2023-08-01T09:53:48","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T13:53:48","slug":"compliance-requirements-for-safe-laboratory-research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/ehs\/compliance-requirements-for-safe-laboratory-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Compliance Requirements for Safe Laboratory Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Obtain prior approval for\u00a0the following activities identified in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/50\/2023\/08\/umes-chemical-hygiene-plan4-1.pdf\">Chemical Hygiene Plan<\/a>\u00a0that require institutional notification:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research involving animals, plants, infectious agents, human subjects, human blood, unfixed human tissues or human cell cultures, recombinant DNA, hazardous chemicals,&nbsp;radioactive material, radiation-producing devices, particle accelerators, Class III or IV lasers, formaldehyde, or methylene chloride<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purchase, possession, or use of explosive material<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modification to fume hood or other local exhaust system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of hazardous chemicals without adequate ventilation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of extremely toxic gases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of respirators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatment or neutralization of hazardous waste prior to disposal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">II.&nbsp;&nbsp; Install hazard warning signs&nbsp;on doors to all laboratories and lab support spaces (cold rooms, equipment rooms, spectroscopy rooms, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">III.&nbsp; Post emergency contact information in the lab.&nbsp; The Emergency Resources Guide&nbsp;is available on-line:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/Police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/Police<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IV.&nbsp; Review the Laboratory Safety Checklist to ensure health and safety requirements are met in the lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">V.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Review elements of the Laboratory&nbsp;Worker Safety Checklist with the employee, and provide additional required training as necessary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VI.&nbsp; Implement procedures in the UMES Personal Protective Equipment Program. Required elements of the program include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Written hazard assessments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provision of&nbsp;necessary personal protective equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training employees in the proper use and care of protective equipment<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VII.&nbsp;&nbsp; For disposal of hazardous and regulated wastes, follow&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/EHS\/Pages\/Waste-Disposal-Guidelines\/\">Waste Disposal Procedures<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VIII.&nbsp; If research involves chemicals, implement the elements of the Chemical Hygiene Plan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Develop and insert the necessary lab-specific elements (chemical inventory, SOPs, Emergency contacts, MSDS and instructions for access, prior approval conditions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit copies of completed SOPs to EHS<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide&nbsp;training&nbsp;for all lab employees, including annual Waste Generator training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obtain a spill kit for containment of minor spills in laboratories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If chemical exposure is suspected, contact EHS at (410) 651-6652 to coordinate exposure assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that employees report (suspected) chemical over-exposures or injuries and seek medical attention.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IX.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If research involves&nbsp;infectious agents, transgenic plants or animals, human blood or tissue,&nbsp;recombinant DNA, or other biohazardous materials, notify the Institutional Biosafety Committee of your intent to conduct this research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Implement the procedures in the UMES Biosafety Plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If working with human blood, unfixed human tissues or human cell cultures,&nbsp;complete Bloodborne Pathogens training annually, and implement procedures of the UMES Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan which is available on-line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If working with infectious agents,&nbsp;Biosafety Level 2 Training must be completed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">X.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If research involves radioactive materials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Review and follow the Authorization Procedures for Radioactive Materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that the required Notice to Employee is posted in the lab by EHS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete Radiation Safety training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implement procedures in the UMES Radiation Safety Manual.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consult the Radiation Safety Officer\/staff (410-651-6652)&nbsp;for additional information concerning X-Ray devices, particle accelerators, or transportation of radioactive materials.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">XI.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; If research involves Class III or Class IV lasers, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, or if researchers plan to prepare and ship hazardous materials by commercial carrier, they must first contact EHS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Obtain prior approval for\u00a0the following activities identified in the\u00a0Chemical Hygiene Plan\u00a0that require institutional notification: II.&nbsp;&nbsp; Install hazard warning signs&nbsp;on doors to all laboratories and lab support spaces (cold rooms, equipment rooms, spectroscopy rooms, etc.).
