During commencement exercises, the student commentator will be seated with the class in full academic regalia and brought to the stage to address those in attendance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Deadline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fall Commencement deadline November 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spring Commencement deadline April 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Commencement Schedule<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commencement exercises are generally held on the third Fridays, in December and May in the Dr. William P. Hytche Center. One student will be chosen for each exercise. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Student Commencement Commentary&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The content of the commentary should be relevant, uplifting and memorable for the students and guests at the commencement exercises. The commentary should be sincere and relevant to the graduating class and university, but the overall message should be universal and relatable. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Criteria for Eligibility&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be eligible for selection as the student commentator, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Candidate must be a graduating senior, cleared by the Office of the Registrar during the semester they make application to deliver the commencement commentary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Candidate must be in good academic standing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Candidate must demonstrate the ability to deliver a commentary to a large audience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Candidate must give evidence demonstrating campus engagement and or service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Application Process\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.cloud.microsoft\/r\/fC7NMW0Rk0\">Click Here to Apply<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be considered for selection as the student commencement commentator, candidates must submit the following.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete application<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Typed, outline of your proposed speech (the final speech should not be longer than five minutes in length)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two letters of recommendation, one from an active member of the UMES faculty and one from a member of the graduating class, who have made application to graduate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A current copy of your resume including\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Academic accomplishments, involvement or recognition\/ honors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Involvement in student organizations, committees or boards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scholarships\/awards, volunteer work and unique student opportunities&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Selection Process&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finalists will be invited to deliver their speeches (commentaries) to the selection committee. &nbsp;If your commentary is selected for final review, rehearse very thoroughly, giving careful attention to the techniques you will use for effective delivery. Your delivery, as well as content, will be considered in the final selection. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The successfully candidate will be required to meet with a representative from the committee to further develop the written commentary and for coaching and practice in its delivery. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Length&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final commentary shall be delivered in 5 minutes or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All application materials should be submitted as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have questions regarding the selection process, please contact the Office of the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs\/University Registrar, rgarcon@umes.edu<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOTIFICATION OF SELECTED STUDENT SPEAKER<br>After all applicants have presented their speeches, the Selection Committee will evaluate each and select the winner.
