Six schools joined UMES to form the conference  \u2013  Delaware State, Howard, Morgan State, North Carolina A&amp;T, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State  \u2013  with the goal of competing at the top division within the NCAA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"239\" height=\"98\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image00281.jpg\" alt=\"Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) symbol\" class=\"wp-image-1612\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MEAC grew to include 13 institutions along the eastern seaboard, where UMES and arch rival Morgan State (along with Coppin State) anchor the conference at the north end.  The others are: Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&amp;M, Hampton, Norfolk State and Savannah State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to helping form the MEAC, Maryland State was a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, a group of historically black institutions that competed against one another during an era when segregation in college athletics mirrored that of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 1912 as the \u201cColored Intercollegiate Athletic Association,\u201d original CIAA members were Bowie State, Elizabeth City, Fayetteville State, St. Augustine&#8217;s, St. Paul\u2019s, Shaw, Virginia Normal and Industrial Institute, Lincoln&nbsp;(of Pennsylvania) and Virginia Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maryland State did not become a CIAA member until 1954 even though it routinely competed against teams from that conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early 1950s, renowned journalist Sam Lacy, sports editor of the Baltimore-based Afro-American newspaper, chastised the CIAA for its failure to \u201cto do something recognizing the fast-growing Eastern Shore institution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Maryland State athletics director and football coach Vernon \u201cSkip\u201d McCain was building a gridiron powerhouse that routinely beat CIAA teams.  As Lacy wrote in a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=2211&amp;dat=19521115&amp;id=weklAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=ffYFAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=1264,2340864\"><strong>Nov. 15, 1952 column<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>, \u201cadmission of the Maryland school would bring new blood into an organization that is sadly in need of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES\u2019 Frederick Douglass Library archives show the college\u2019s teams had no conference affiliation for about 15 years prior to World War II&nbsp;into the mid-1950s, but had been&nbsp;a&nbsp;charter member of the defunct&nbsp;Mid-Atlantic Athletic Association that competed during the Great Depression.  When the institution&nbsp;was the academic equivalent of a secondary school in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century, it competed in the Scholastic Athletic Association.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the start of the 2011-12 academic year, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore fielded teams in 15 varsity sports \u2013 seven for men and eight for women.
