{"id":2387,"date":"2021-11-23T12:58:43","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T16:58:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/?p=2387"},"modified":"2022-04-28T11:42:14","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T15:42:14","slug":"watchful-eyes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/watchful-eyes\/","title":{"rendered":"Watchful Eyes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>May we be a tad presumptuous<br>for focusing on an oculus?<br>Let us not be ambiguous;<br>just look up from your syllabus.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since&nbsp;the 1940s, students who have&nbsp;strolled the University of Maryland Eastern Shore\u2019s historic&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/the-academic-oval\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1943\">Academic Oval<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/125\/Content\/Stories\/The-Academic-Oval\/\">&nbsp;<\/a>have done so under the watchful eyes of oculi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also known as \u201c<em>oeil-de-bouef<\/em>\u201d \u2013  French for bull\u2019s eye  \u2013  an oculus is a small, circular window frequently incorporated into the design of Colonial Revival-style buildings such as those on the UMES campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The majestic pillars on&nbsp;Colonial Revival&nbsp;buildings, which can be simple or ornate, get the most notice.  But just above their porticos,&nbsp;you just might find these curious accoutrements staring back at you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are four distinctly different oculi on The Oval.
