{"id":2385,"date":"2021-11-23T12:58:08","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T16:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/?p=2385"},"modified":"2022-02-09T12:47:00","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T16:47:00","slug":"the-flag-mall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/the-flag-mall\/","title":{"rendered":"The Flag Mall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The year was 1993.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major landscaping was underway on the UMES campus.&nbsp;The beautification project included brick inlays along the historic&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/the-academic-oval\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1943\">Academic Oval<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/125\/Content\/Stories\/The-Academic-Oval\/\">&nbsp;<\/a>and in front of John T. Williams Hall.  Not far away, the Richard A. Williams administration building in 2009<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the minds of university leaders, something was missing.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Herman Franklin, who served UMES as Vice President for Student Affairs from 1977 to 2000, grew up in a two-story farmhouse in May\u2019s Lick, Ky., where his parents displayed the largest American flag around.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt would fly from the upper porches and drape the house all the way down,\u201d Franklin said.\u00a0  \u201cOver the years, my parents always flew the flag during Veterans\u2019 day and other patriotic celebrations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHence, my love of flags!,\u201d Franklin said.\u00a0<strong>\u201c<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/william-p-hytche-sr\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1411\">Dr. (William) Hytche<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/125\/Content\/Stories\/William-P--Hytche-Sr-\/\">,<\/a>\u00a0Dr. (Ronnie) Holden and I felt very strongly that we should provide international students with a sense of pride and the ability to identify with their country flags right here on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It so happened that at the time the project was being discussed, local philanthropist Richard A. Henson was lobbying Gov. William Donald Schaefer for money from the state to pay for campus upgrades.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International Flag Mall was created in 1994.  While there was not enough to pay for poles to display every flag of all international students\u2019 home countries simultaneously, Franklin felt strongly they should see their national colors during the school year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image00254-1024x734.jpg\" alt=\"Plaque honoring Dr. Herman Franklin\" class=\"wp-image-1426\" width=\"299\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image00254-1024x734.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image00254-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image00254-768x551.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image00254-1536x1101.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image00254-2048x1468.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Franklin devised a rotation system and wrote a strict protocol.  According to \u201cPolishing the Diamond,\u201d Hytche\u2019s 2002 book on UMES\u2019 history, \u201cflags are flown for a period of six weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After six weeks, another rotation of flags takes their place \u201cso (a) country\u2019s flag for each foreign student is flown at least two six-week periods in a year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Franklin didn\u2019t stop there.\u00a0 In 2002, he and his wife, LaRaeu, established the \u201cDr. and Mrs. Herman Franklin Award\u201d endowment, which provides funds to maintain flags for the mall and support book scholarships for all students.\u00a0 A plaque<sup>*<\/sup>at the foot of the American flag in front of Williams hall pays tribute to Franklin\u2019s service and generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>As told by HERMAN FRANKLIN, Ph.D.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>*<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>The flag mall was&nbsp;included in dedication ceremonies that were&nbsp;planned Sept. 11, 2001 for<\/em>&nbsp;<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/sept-11-2001\/\">UMES Boulevard,&nbsp;but&nbsp;never took place.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/125\/Content\/Stories\/Sept--11,-2001\/\">&nbsp;<\/a><em>&nbsp; (Maryland) Gov. Parris Glendening, who was scheduled to be in&nbsp;Princess Anne that day,&nbsp;&#8220;sent&nbsp;me&nbsp;a letter of regret that he was&nbsp;unable to attend the dedication on 9\/11\/01 because of the&nbsp;national events of that day,&#8221;&nbsp;Herman Franklin said.
