{"id":2363,"date":"2021-11-23T12:51:05","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T16:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/?p=2363"},"modified":"2026-04-03T12:19:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T16:19:01","slug":"hallowed-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/hallowed-ground\/","title":{"rendered":"Hallowed ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"597\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image0046.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1336\" style=\"width:426px;height:285px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image0046.jpg 597w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image0046-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cemetery\/2671728\/university-of-maryland-eastern-shore-burial-ground\">UMES burial ground<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>UMES students and visitors to the university often ask: \u201cWhy is there a cemetery on campus?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is \u2026 little is known about its origins but official Methodist Church documents offer one explanation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campus cemetery is the final resting place for three early instructional leaders when the institution was known as Princess Anne Academy:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/benjamin-oliver-bird\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1779\">Benjamin Oliver&nbsp;<strong>Bird<\/strong><\/a>(1853 -1897),<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/portia-e-lovett-bird\/\">Portia E. Lovett Bird<\/a><\/strong> (1859-1899),&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/thomas-h-kiah\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1852\"><strong>Thomas Henry Kiah<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;(1873-1936) and his first wife, Mary (1879-1918).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benjamin Bird died in his early forties; his headstone&nbsp;says his date of birth was Aug. 11, 1853.  Minutes of a meeting of the Methodist Episcopal Church\u2019s Delaware Conference, however,&nbsp;took note of&nbsp;Bird\u2019s passing and&nbsp;reported his birthday as Aug. 14, 1855.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His funeral was attended by Blacks and whites alike as he was one of the community\u2019s most highly respected citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird\u2019s headstone reads:<em>\u201cGod knows the way. He holds the key. He guides us with an unerring hand. Sometime with tearless eye we\u2019ll see up there. Some day, we\u2019ll understand.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His wish was to be buried on campus, according to those same church conference minutes, which&nbsp;read, \u201cAfter less than 42 years of life he rests, where asked to be placed, under the spreading oak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tree did not survive, but Bird&#8217;s modern-day grave marker is etched with a likeness of a spreading oak.  Cypress trees that once lined a path to the cemetery behind Waters Hall on the south side of campus also did not survive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird\u2019s wife, Portia, assumed the duties of Academy principal after his death and&nbsp;served in the post for two years. She was 40 when she died.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the Birds, Kiah also died in office.  He suffered a cut to his leg in late December 1936 and was taken to the hospital Salisbury, where he developed complications and succumbed to blood poisoning on Dec. 30.  Kiah was 64.  He is buried alongside his wife, the former Mary Roberta Townsend of Stockton, Md., who died 18 years earlier at age&nbsp;39.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funerals for the Birds and Thomas Kiah were held at&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/metropolitan-united-methodist-church-2\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1392\">Metropolitan Methodist (Episcopal) Church<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;in Princess Anne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UMES\u2019 cemetery, along with the buildings ringing the Academic Oval, was included in a designated historic district&nbsp;the federal government\u2019s National Register of Historic Places approved in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/01\/Eldon-Hall-farm-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3007\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/01\/Eldon-Hall-farm-web.jpg 350w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/01\/Eldon-Hall-farm-web-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/eldon-g-marksman-m-d\/\">Dr. &amp; Mrs. Eldon Marksman&#8217;s<br>final resting place<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Cemeteries on college campuses are not unheard of; Tuskegee, Hampton, Clemson and Notre Dame are among other universities that have them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UMES&#8217; cemetery is maintained by the university&#8217;s Physical Plant staff.  A&nbsp;wreath&nbsp;is&nbsp;displayed on the wrought-iron fence that surrounds it and is usually placed there when the university celebrates Founders\u2019 Week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two other graves are tucked away on a small plot off College Backbone Road on the east side of campus that was once the home of Dr. Eldon Marksman and his wife, Callie.  Marksman was the campus physician in the early 20th century, and the university acquired his property for its acreage to accommodate agriculture research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The simple, four-plot burial ground, perhaps one of the region\u2019s smallest, is a gentle and spiritual reminder of the hard work and sacrifice of the institution\u2019s trailblazers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UMES students and visitors to the university often ask: \u201cWhy is there a cemetery on campus?\u201d The truth is \u2026 little is known about its origins but official Methodist Church documents offer one explanation.
