Catch It.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that\u2019s a slogan.  And slogans&nbsp;often&nbsp;change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question gnawed at Kimberly Dumpson, UMES\u2019 Alumni Affairs director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dumpson staged a&nbsp;pep rally in the Tawes\u2019 gym on the Saturday of homecoming weekend and was scouting the venue for the 2012 edition when something on the floor of the lobby caught her eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set prominently in the terrazzo just inside the front doors, where thousands have trod since the venerable building opened in 1965, is a circular maroon-and-gray emblem emblazoned with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Maryland State College &#8211; 1886<\/strong>; the institution\u2019s name from 1948 until 1970.<\/li><li>An image of the school&#8217;s mascot, what appears to be a stylized&nbsp;<strong>red-tailed<\/strong>&nbsp;hawk.<\/li><li>And three Latin words:&nbsp;<em><strong>facta non verba<\/strong>.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Translation: Deeds, not words<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one is certain how long&nbsp;<em><strong>facta non verba<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;has been the institution\u2019s motto, or who was responsible for choosing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the school\u2019s oldest records, when it was known as Princess Anne Academy, show&nbsp;Latin was taught as a subject  &#8212;  because the classical language was viewed as what&nbsp;well-educated people studied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That the motto in the Tawes&#8217; lobby dates to the John T.
