{"id":2204,"date":"2021-11-19T17:07:32","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T21:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/?p=2204"},"modified":"2022-02-09T15:37:41","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T19:37:41","slug":"sept-11-2001","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/sept-11-2001\/","title":{"rendered":"Sept. 11, 2001"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/Dr.-Ronnie-Holden-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3281\" width=\"222\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/Dr.-Ronnie-Holden-web.jpg 375w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2022\/02\/Dr.-Ronnie-Holden-web-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Dr. Ronnie Holden<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two days before the University of Maryland Eastern Shore was to celebrate the 115th anniversary of its founding, the nation  &#8212;  and the world  &#8212;  came to a standstill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terrorism on American soil snuffed out a long-anticipated celebration for the\u00a0university  \u2013  a dedication ceremony for an important public works project that changed the face of campus in the early 21st century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES Boulevard  \u2013  also known as Maryland Rt. 822  \u2013  was to be christened by state and local dignitaries the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Understandably, the event did not take place.  It was never rescheduled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople just started using it,\u201d said Dr. Ronnie Holden, then UMES\u2019 vice president for administrative affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just as \u201c9-11\u201d changed America, the new road transformed the university by connecting the campus directly to U.S. Rt. 13.   The new UMES Boulevard also represented a key component in the reconfiguration of campus that included construction of the Student Services Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holden, who joined UMES\u2019 staff in 1977, remembered coming to work earlier than usual that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wanted to make sure we had everything in place,\u201d he said. \u201cThe governor and a lot of dignitaries were coming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donnie Drewer, the lower Eastern Shore\u2019s long-time State Highway Administration engineer, recalled the event was to be \u201ca great hoopla to celebrate the opening of UMES Boulevard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Drewer and late UMES President William P. Hytche Sr., it represented a joint achievement after two decades of lobbying for the road project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both pledged they would not retire until the road was built.  Hytche, however, retired in 1997\u00a0but remained\u00a0visible in the community.  Drewer worked for the SHA for five decades before retiring (in 2016).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m glad Dr. Hytche was able to see the road open,\u201d Drewer said. \u201cI\u2019m just sorry it took so long. I think it has made a huge difference for UMES.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holden concurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt it has been important to the university,\u201d Holden said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot easier now to get here; you don\u2019t have to go through town.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brian Shane, a (Salisbury) Daily Times reporter, visited UMES that morning to interview Dr. Jackie Thomas, who was serving as interim president after Dr. Dolores Spikes resigned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While touring the campus, Thomas\u2019 \u201ccell phone was ringing a lot, but he seemed to ignore (them),\u201d Shane said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holden speculated some of those calls probably came from him  \u2013  after a colleague urged him to turn on a television set in his office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image0047.jpg\" alt=\"Road sign for East 822 UMES Blvd\" class=\"wp-image-1344\" width=\"386\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image0047.jpg 492w, https:\/\/wwwcp.umes.edu\/125\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/09\/image0047-300x273.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Southbound sign on U.S. Rt. 13<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt some point,\u201d Shane said, Thomas \u201cdid pick up the phone, and a confused look came over his face.  \u2018What? They bombed the Pentagon,\u2019 (Thomas) said to the person on the other end.  Nobody really had a clear idea of what was happening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drewer and his colleagues also were unaware of what was taking place in New York, Washington and western Pennsylvania.  They showed up at a makeshift stage set up for the mid-morning ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were told there was a national emergency and the governor (Parris Glendening) would not be coming (to Princess Anne),\u201d Drewer said.  \u201cWe all got in a circle and said a prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drewer remembered those&nbsp;who had gathered at the dedication site went to a building on campus and ate&nbsp;the early lunch planned for the Governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shane, the journalist, said, \u201cI don&#8217;t recall anyone on campus really showing any awareness or panic of what was happening.\u201d  He was summoned back to the newsroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UMES administrators decided to maintain a routine schedule for the remainder of the day as most schools did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe see how it\u2019s changed America,\u201d Holden said. \u201cAt one point, we thought we were invincible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two days before the University of Maryland Eastern Shore was to celebrate the 115th anniversary of its founding, the nation &#8212; and the world &#8212; came to a standstill.
